Broca's Area Asymmetry and Language Deficits in Autism

چکیده
improved recognition of the symptoms, greater parental concern, and possible epigenetic factors and modifications of gene expression. The theory that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and thimerosol were responsible for the apparent increased prevalence of autism has largely been put to rest (Madsen KM et al. Pediatrics 2003;112:604-606; Smeeth L et al. Lancet 2004;364:963-969). ASD has a strong genetic basis, and a specific medical cause or environmental trigger is found in only 6-10% of cases, eg. prenatal insult, metabolic and toxic disorders, tuberous sclerosis, and postnatal encephalitis (Baird G et al. BMJ 2003;327:488-493; see Ped Neur Briefs October 2003;17:79-80). The study of the etiology of autism is multifaceted, and future research will involve pediatric neurologist, psychiatrist, pathologist, and geneticist.

Language-association cortex asymmetry in autism and specific language impairment.
Language deficits are among the core impairments of autism. We previously reported asymmetry reversal of frontal language cortex in boys with autism. Specific language impairment (SLI) and autism share similar language deficits and may share genetic links. This study evaluated asymmetry of frontal language cortex in a new, independent sample of right-handed boys, including a new sample of boys ...
متن کاملBrain activation during semantic processing in autism spectrum disorders via functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Language and communication deficits are core features of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), even in high-functioning adults with ASD. This study investigated brain activation patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging in right-handed adult males with ASD and a control group, matched on age, handedness, and verbal IQ. Semantic processing in the controls produced robust activation in Broc...
متن کاملA comparative magnetic resonance imaging study of the anatomy, variability, and asymmetry of Broca's area in the human and chimpanzee brain.
The frontal operculum-classically considered to be Broca's area-has special significance and interest in clinical, cognitive, and comparative neuroscience given its role in spoken language and the long-held assumption that structural asymmetry of this region of cortex may be related to functional lateralization of human language. We performed a detailed morphological and morphometric analysis o...
متن کاملTemporal Reliability and Lateralization of the Resting-State Language Network
The neural processing loop of language is complex but highly associated with Broca's and Wernicke's areas. The left dominance of these two areas was the earliest observation of brain asymmetry. It was demonstrated that the language network and its functional asymmetry during resting state were reproducible across institutions. However, the temporal reliability of resting-state language network ...
متن کاملتاثیر روشهای ارتباطی جایگزین و مکمل بر زبان و رفتار اجتماعی کودکان با اختلال طیف اتیسم
Teaching children with autism is a challenging task for educators and parents, as the children display marked deficits in language and social behaviors. One of the major goals of an intervention program for children with autism is to provide them a method of functional communication and ample opportunities to practice these skills. For some children with autism, a communication system that uses...
